If every person with a headache had $1 for every time they heard “drink more water” to help with their headache, I imagine we would all be living in the Maldives.

Headaches are more complicated than just hydration. There are many different types of headaches with different causes. Here are some of the common headaches osteopaths can treat and what can cause them.

Cervicogenic headache - This headache typically starts at the base of your neck and radiates around to the front of your head. It is caused by tension build up in the muscles of the neck which irritate the surrounding nerves. They usually occurs on one side of your head, but can be both. Reducing the muscle tension around the neck, jaw, upper back and shoulders can be of great benefit to these headaches.

Tension headache - This feels like you have a vice or band around your head. There is a lot of pressure and pain that occurs on both sides of your head, like someone is squeezing it from both sides. Stress can be the biggest contributing factor for these headaches with jaw pain and clenching/grinding of the jaw, also a big contributor. Treatment around the jaw, neck and shoulders can provide great relief for these headaches in conjunction with stress release techniques. Your osteopath might recommend a psychologist to help with stress if they feel it is appropriate.

Sinus headache - Sinus headaches are usually caused by infection or inflammation in the sinuses of the skull. The purpose of sinuses is to lighten the weight of our head. Hence, why patients will often describe a heaviness in their face with these headaches. The sinuses most commonly involved are frontal and maxillary. Headaches will generally start in the region of the affected sinus and can radiate out from there.

Cluster headache  - Typically these occur behind the eye or one side of the head. They can come on very suddenly and are described as sharp, burning or piercing sensation. These headaches are closely associated with the autonomic nervous system and can be triggered by stress, alcohol, bright lights, altitude, exercise, heat and certain foods. Treatment can help reduce muscle tension associated with stress. However, further investigation may be required into identifying the underlying cause of the headache.

Migraine headache - Migraines are complicated and diverse. I will upload a separate blog for migraines so I can dive deep into their cause, symptoms and treatment.
