I get this question daily. It is one of the most common questions I get asked after “What is an Osteopath?”
I learnt a simple rule that has helped me and many patients when it comes to deciding whether heat or ice is the best option. So here it goes….
If you can see swelling = Ice
No swelling = Heat
If there is swelling, the inflammation will be relatively superficial. Applying ice will be able to have great benefit to this type of injury.
If there is pain and injury, but you cannot see swelling, it might mean the injury is slightly deeper and the heat will be the appropriate option in this case.
However, if you see a bruise, with no swelling, I would advice ice. This has been the only exception to the rule I have come across so far.
If you are concerned or confused about which is most appropriate for your pain and injury, please call Anna or Tayla on 0422 639 369 or you can book an appointment online.
